The drums add fills to colour the songs you want to play –
and you can add fills anywhere, anytime.

But some places sound better than others.

When you want a bigger splash of colour, try a
a. full-bar fill b. full tank of petrol c. full-body massage

Play two bars of the rock pattern.
One bar as usual, then one whole bar of fill on the snare. Like this...

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
x x x x x x x x R L R L R L R L
(hats) (snare)

You can even play half a bar on one drum and half on another!

Experiment.

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
x x x x x x x x R L R L
                        R L R L
(hats) (tom 1) (tom 2)

Sometimes fills are written as a ratio.

1:1 means one bar of rock beat and one bar of fill.

1½:½ means one and a half bars of rock beat and
a. half a bar b. half a minute c. half a nahgeelaof fill.

Full-bar fills fit just about anywhere,
but there are two places they’ll fit really well.

They sound great at the end of each longer phrase of music
and that’s usually about every
a. 8 or 16 weeks b. 8 or 16 bars c. 8 or 16 doughnuts

And they sound great linking between
a. verse and chorus b. chorus and verse c. both

Don’t forget to count back from the 1 beat of the new section,
so the fill fits fine.

And don’t forget that at the end of your full-bar fill it’ll usually sound good to add aa. room b. fireworks display c. crash
before you start the new section.

Along with the kick, since it's the start of a new bar!

As you become more comfortable,
you can mix’n’match half-bar and full-bar fills,
using single drums, or more than one drum.

Make sure you count the beats so you don’t get lost and lose it.
